Materials

Materials are fundamental to the way we design. Every piece begins with a careful consideration of how timber, metal, glass or stone will contribute structurally, functionally and aesthetically to the finished furniture. Rather than following trends or imitating other finishes, we work with enduring materials chosen for their honesty, longevity and the character they develop over time.

Oak, steel and brass form the core material palette of the Reference Point Collection, while stone, leather and glass are introduced where they enhance the function or expression of a piece. Together they create furniture that feels authentic, cohesive and designed to age gracefully.

Oak is central to much of Black Pear’s work. Its strength, warmth and expressive grain make it equally suited to finely crafted furniture and larger architectural joinery.

We favour oak not simply because it is beautiful, but because it performs exceptionally well. It machines cleanly, develops a rich patina with age and can be repaired and refinished throughout its lifetime, allowing furniture to evolve rather than deteriorate.

Every piece is finished with a durable hardwax oil that protects the timber while preserving its natural texture. Unlike film-forming lacquers, these finishes allow the wood to breathe and can be easily maintained or refreshed as the furniture ages.

Brass introduces warmth, precision and refinement. Whether used for handles, inlays or structural details, it provides a subtle contrast to timber while celebrating the craftsmanship involved in each piece.

Unlike plated finishes, solid brass develops a natural patina through use. Some clients choose to preserve its polished appearance, while others enjoy the richness and individuality that develops over time.

Steel provides strength with visual lightness. Its structural performance allows furniture to appear balanced and effortless while creating opportunities for expressed junctions and refined detailing.

Many of our steel components are individually hand-patinated using a multi-stage finishing process developed in our workshop. This labour-intensive technique creates subtle variations in tone and texture, ensuring every piece is unique.

Integrity – The materials we choose influence far more than appearance. They determine how furniture feels to the touch, how it performs in everyday use and how it matures over decades of living with it.

By selecting authentic materials and allowing them to express their natural qualities honestly, we create furniture designed not simply to last, but to become more meaningful with time.
