A Bespoke Burr Oak Cabinet Designed to Transform Your Entrance Hall

by Apr 16, 2026Bespoke furniture projects

A well-designed entrance hall does more than welcome you home — it sets the tone for everything that follows. For this project, we were commissioned to create a bespoke cabinet that would act as both a focal point and a practical storage solution within a contemporary home.

The brief was clear: design a handmade hall cabinet that combined modern aesthetics with the warmth and character of natural wood, whilst echoing the design language of a previous bespoke media unit we had created for the client.

Every piece of bespoke furniture begins with a conversation. In this case, the client had a genuine passion for timber and an appreciation for thoughtful, well-executed design.

Working collaboratively, we developed a cabinet that felt entirely at home within the space — not simply as storage, but as a defining architectural feature. The result is a bespoke entrance hall cabinet that balances clean, modern lines with rich, organic texture.

Bespoke Burr Oak Cabinet

Why Burr Oak is Perfect for a Bespoke Cabinet

At the heart of this custom-made cabinet is burr oak veneer — a material prized for its rarity and visual complexity.

Burr oak forms from a burl growth on a tree, creating intricate grain patterns made up of tight curls and swirls. This makes it one of the most distinctive materials available for bespoke cabinetry, ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same.

For this cabinet, the veneer was carefully book-matched across the doors. This technique creates a mirrored grain pattern, giving the cabinet a striking yet balanced appearance — ideal for a statement piece in an entrance hall.

The Craft Behind a Handmade Cabinet

Creating a bespoke wooden cabinet using burr oak requires a high level of craftsmanship. The veneer is more delicate than straight-grained timber, meaning it must be carefully sourced, handled, and applied.

Each stage — from selection through to finishing — demands precision. This slower, more considered approach is what defines true handmade furniture and ensures a result that stands apart from mass-produced alternatives.

One of the defining aspects of our work is the way we bring together natural timber with carefully considered metal detailing.

In this piece, subtle brass elements were introduced to complement the burr oak veneer and to echo the design language of previous furniture within the home. The contrast between the warmth of the wood and the precision of the metal creates a quiet tension — one that elevates the cabinet beyond simple storage.

This combination is not applied as decoration, but as part of the overall design intent. Each material is chosen for how it interacts with the other, resulting in a bespoke cabinet that feels both contemporary and enduring.

It is this balance — between organic texture and engineered detail — that allows us to create pieces that are truly individual.

While the cabinet makes a strong visual statement, it is also highly functional. Designed as a bespoke coat cupboard, it provides:

  • Hanging space for coats and outerwear
  • Integrated shelving for accessories and storage
  • A clean, uncluttered exterior

The recessed finger pull detail allows the doors to open seamlessly, maintaining the uninterrupted flow of the burr oak veneer. Subtle brass accents were introduced to complement other bespoke pieces within the home, creating a cohesive interior scheme.

Sustainability is an important part of how we approach every bespoke cabinet we create.

Where possible, we work with responsibly sourced timbers and specialist suppliers who understand both the provenance and quality of the materials they provide. Burr oak, by its nature, is used carefully and selectively, ensuring minimal waste and maximum appreciation of each unique veneer.

Our finishing choices are equally considered. The use of natural hardwax oils allows the timber to breathe and age gracefully, avoiding the need for harsher chemical treatments whilst maintaining durability for everyday use.

This approach ensures that each piece is not only beautiful, but also aligned with a more thoughtful and sustainable way of making furniture.

The cabinet is finished with a natural hardwax oil, chosen to protect the wood while enhancing its depth and texture.

To maintain a bespoke oak cabinet, we recommend:

  • Cleaning with a soft, damp cloth
  • Avoiding harsh chemical cleaners
  • Reapplying a natural oil, such as linseed, if the finish requires refreshing over time

A piece of this complexity takes time to create. From initial design through to final installation, a bespoke cabinet of this nature typically requires a lead time of 12–16 weeks.

This reflects not only the craftsmanship involved, but also the careful sourcing of materials such as burr oak.

More Than Just a Cabinet

This project is a reminder that bespoke cabinets are not simply functional objects — they are integral to how a home feels and functions.

Designed with intention and built to last, this burr oak hall cabinet will quietly evolve with the home over time, becoming part of its story for years to come.

At its core, this is not simply a bespoke cabinet — it is a piece designed with longevity in mind.

Unlike mass-produced alternatives, which are often replaced within a few years, a handmade cabinet of this nature is built to endure. The materials, construction methods, and finishes are all chosen to ensure the piece will not only last, but improve with time.

As the burr oak matures, its tones deepen and its character becomes more pronounced. Subtle marks and signs of use add to its story, rather than detract from it.

This is the essence of an heirloom piece — furniture that becomes part of the home, passed through years of daily life, and valued not just for how it looks, but for what it represents.
